What is an Everyday Adventure Session?

If you’ve looked around my website, you’ve probably seen me talk about Everyday Adventure photography sessions. What is that?, you might wonder. Maybe you’re curious, but aren’t quite sure if it’s the right fit for your family. Let me answer some of the questions I typically get about this type of session. If you feel like you still have questions, please reach out and we can chat in detail.

What is an Everyday Adventure Session?

To put it simply, an Everyday Adventure session is a photography session shot in true documentary style, typically 2-3 hours in length. I love to use Everyday Adventure sessions to tell the story of your family - exactly as you are today - by documenting a favorite family activity.

We’ll work together to pick a favorite activity that defines your family in whatever stage of life you’re in: a morning exploring your favorite local haunts, an afternoon at the beach, or a lazy Sunday making pancakes & playing in your backyard at home. Your family can enjoy your time together with minimal interaction from me.

When I shoot in this documentary fashion, I won’t pose you, guide you, or ask you to do anything specific for the camera. I’ll “document” your life as you live it. My goal, as your photographer, is to capture the authentic moments that make your people exactly who they are. I love finding all of the interactions that define your crew - the big, loud, potentially comedic moments, as well as the quieter, more subtle and intimate ones.

What activity should we plan for our Everyday Adventure Session?

Pick something that your family loves to do and feels meaningful for you. I recommend an activity that you do often - this isn’t necessarily the time for something new or unfamiliar that might make anyone feel uncomfortable. Some more ideas (in addition to the ones above): a family bbq, playing cards & games, jumping on the trampoline, fruit picking, going for a hike and an ice cream stop. We won’t try to pack in too much. These sessions should feel natural, relaxed, and stress-free - both during the planning process and for the few hours that we’re shooting.

Activities to avoid include: busy playgrounds (lots of other folks will end up in your photos), restaurant meals (no one likes photos of themselves eating), or activities that involve screen time.

Is an Everyday Adventure Session right for your family?

This type of session is perfect for you if:

  • You want to hold on to today’s best moments - the ones that feel like they’re passing quickly.

  • You feel like your kids are growing up too fast, and you want to make sure you never forget what these days felt like.

  • You appreciate that the best parts of life often happen during the most ordinary days.

  • Your family feels goofy, spontaneous, messy, and a little chaotic - and those are the good things.

  • You want to remember not just what your family looked like during these times… but what your family FELT like.

Does this sound like you? Let’s chat about how we can plan the perfect session to tell your family’s story.
