There’s a reason that San Diego is consistently ranked as one of America’s favorites cities. It has near-perfect weather year-round, and access to just about any location you could want for a photography session. But sometimes the best location for your family’s photography session is the one you know best - your home.
If you haven’t considered an in-home family photography session, here are 5 reasons why I think they’re awesome.
1. Your home is the center of your life.
Epic outdoor locations are great, plentiful here in San Diego, and make for amazing pictures. But your home is the spot where your most normal, everyday memories and milestones happen, whatever stage of life you’re in. It’s where your babies said their first words, took their first steps, and tried their first favorite foods. It’s where you build Legos, jump on the bed, and splash in puddles on rainy days.
2. Everyone feels comfortable at home.
It’s easy to open up when you feel relaxed and at-ease. Some kids (and some parents, too) may feel shy at the start of a photography session, which is totally normal. Being in a familiar spot helps everyone feel comfortable and open up. A great way to break the ice is to have the kids give me a tour of the house and show me their rooms and favorite toys.
3. Your home has lots of options and flexibility.
In-home sessions typically offer a variety of options, both indoors and outside. If your child is feeling quiet and mellow, you can snuggle on the couch while reading a book and having your morning coffee. Lots of energy? Break the rules and let the kids jump on your bed. Is it a lovely day? Let’s get into the backyard to practice cartwheels or play tag. Your in-home session will always include an activity that your family loves.
4. You may not live in your “forever home” yet, but your home will always be in your memories.
When our daughter was born, we lived in a house that was tiny, dark, and outdated. Two and a half years later, we brought our baby son home to the same house, and somehow managed to squeeze him into it too. There were many things we didn’t love about this house, but it was ours and it was the first home our babies ever knew. Our memories of this house will always be full of love. You may not live in your “forever home” yet, but this home will always be an important part of your family’s story. You’ll be so happy to have images from this time and place in your life.
5. In-home photography sessions are easy!
It’s incredibly convenient to do your family pictures at home. You don’t have to pack a diaper bag or bring a change of clothes. You don’t have to fight a squirmy baby into a carseat. There’s no battling traffic or worrying about finding a parking spot. You have plenty of snacks available. And potty breaks are a piece of cake!
You might worry that your home isn’t Pinterest-ready. You might think it’s too small, too dark, and not stylish enough. Listen to me… it doesn’t matter. An experienced, confident, trustworthy photographer can make beautiful images of your family in any setting. Your home is perfect because it’s yours.
